In this online course, Andrew James will take you through the process of creating a spirited and engaging portrait sketch with a strong description of likeness. He begins by creating line and tonal drawings which are used to inform his final oil painting. Working from the model in the studio, Andrew shares his insights and experience while he works, with additional commentary and analysis of his work. Course participants will be set 5 assignments enabling them to apply the techniques demonstrated by Andrew to their own work.

Andrew James NEAC RP
Andrew is a self taught artist working predominantly in oil paint. He is a member both of The New English Art Club and The Royal Society of Portrait Painters, of which he was formally its Vice President. He is an immensely popular artist and tutor, with his work in constant demand. The work itself is recognised for capturing resemblance and vitality of his subjects through employing a richness of texture, a heightened and expressive colour use and a boldness of gestural brushwork. Although a painter of various genre he is largely recognised for his non commissioned and more personal portrait painting.
LESSON PLAN
- Introduction – Andrew introduces himself and the course from his studio, giving an outline of what he intends to undertake in the course, as well as a brief talk about his career as a painter.
- Materials – In this video Andrew discusses his palette and other materials used throughout the course
- Drawing One – Andrew makes a linear drawing of the sitter in charcoal pencil, concentrating exclusively on proportions, demarcation of shadow shapes, lost edges, as well as weight and gesture of line.
- Drawing Assignment One
- Drawing Two – Here Andrew undertakes a charcoal study, looking once again to capture essential likeness with clear demarcation of form, via accurately graded measurement of tonal values. The study is exclusively made to enable likeness to be found by excluding small forms and concentrating upon large volumes.
- Drawing Assignment Two
- Painting Introduction – In this video prepares for his painting.
- Painting Part One – Andrew commences painting by going through a process of blocking out.
- Painting Assignment One
- Painting Part Two – Andrew progresses his painting by laying in information.
- Painting Assignment Two
- Painting Part Three – Andrew concludes his painting by editing and balancing values.
- Critique – Andrew offers a critique of his work having had time to reflect on the finished painting.
- Painting Assignment 3
- The End – Andrew wraps up the course.
“In this online course I aim to achieve two things. Firstly, I would wish to enable the practitioner to heighten their ability to read form – the likeness – with greater accuracy, with this being achieved largely by a closer study and greater consolidation of tonal value, colour temperature, colour relationships, as well as unifying broader volumes.
Secondly, and of equal importance, I hope to encourage the artist to paint and draw in as direct a manner as possible. With a spirit of greater courage helping to eliminate hesitancy, one can thereby record the more salient information with genuine conviction, believing as always that this leads to a more integrated and harmonious portrait”
