Morag Caister
Morag Caister is an award winning London based figurative-portrait artist working mostly in oils and pastel on paper. In 2022, Morag was the winner of Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year. She has undertaken commissions for the likes of Sir Lenny Henry, and her work has featured in many notable collections including the National Portrait Gallery and Soho House.
Morag’s portraits are vivid and dynamic, with intricate lines and thoughtful use of colour resulting in representations that are both emotive and truthful.

- Introduction : Morag introduces herself and the course from her London studio, giving an outline of her career and what can be expected from the course.
- Materials : In this video Morag discusses her palette and other materials used throughout the course
- Small studies exercise : Morag demonstrates three different exercises to undertake before beginning your portrait, to help gather information about your subject.
- Assignment one
- Painting part one : In this lesson Morag begins her portrait, focusing on the lines.
- Assignment two
- Painting part two : Morag continues her portrait by introducing colour to the skin.
- Assignment three
- Painting part three : In this lesson, Morag focuses on the clothing and hair.
- Assignment four
- Painting part four : Before finishing the portrait, Morag uses a photo of the sitter to add detail to the face.
- Assignment five
- Review : Morag evaluates the portrait and it’s merits while identifying lessons that can be learned from it.
