Oil on linen canvas board 40 x 40 cm. After spending time looking through one of my books on Joan Eardley I felt very inspired. I live on the north east coast of Scotland so I know the area she painted in. There are some nice old harbours, the open sea that dashes against the sea wall and rocks by the beach. Working mainly from my right brain I went straight in and close to the end of the painting I stopped to assess. Then went back in. I quite like the general feel of the work but I am having to decide what to do with the left side of the painting as there is a kind of whale bone effect sticking up. Painting is not easy, every painting is bringing it’s own ‘oh dear’ but will carry on with a painting a day.

Thank you Karen, I love Caithness and have been on holiday there the last three years! No wonder you miss it! Yes I have the book ‘The living mountain’ by Nan Shepherd it is in my art room and you are right she writes as we paint!

I love the feel of this painting – it takes me instantly back to walking the coast in Caithness. – i lived there for years,, & I miss the wild coastline & those huge seas & skies. Such great energy in this painting – it feels very alive. I can feel the urgency in trying to capture a moment & convey what youre feeling. Tell me about painting not being easy! I’ve burned a few today… have you read. ‘The living mountain’ by nNan Shepherd – she writes as we’d like to paint
