Julian Le Bas

Julian Le Bas is a distinguished contemporary artist known for his mastery of plein air painting and drawing. His dynamic paintings and expressive drawings vividly capture the emotional connection between humans and nature. By working directly from observation, Julian’s landscapes are infused with the subtleties of light as it moves across the landscape. 

Writing about him in the catalogue of his Towner show of 1990, Dennis Creffield hailed him as ‘The Lover and the Poet of The South Downs’ and said how hard it is to make authentic images of this land.

LESSON PLAN

    1. Introduction – Julian introduces himself and the course, highlighting the aspects of his life and career and detailing what he hopes to express in this course.
    2. Charcoal Drawing Introduction – In the introduction to Julian’s first drawing he explains his choice of materials and the location he has chosen.
    3. Charcoal Drawing – In this video, Julian creates a drawing in charcoal while explaining his techniques and process.
    4. Assignment One
    5. Pastel Drawing Introduction –  Julian explains his choice of second location and materials.
    6. Pastel Drawing – Julian produces a pastel drawing and while giving insights into his methods throughout.
    7. Assignment Two
    8. Painting Introduction – Julian discusses the location for his painting and details his materials including canvas, palette and medium.
    9. Painting Part One – In this video Julian begins his painting while discussing his process and how he responds to the environment around him.
    10. Painting Part Two – With the rapidly changing light, Julian concludes his painting and reviews his work

    In this online course I hope for you to gain a sense of adventure and find a connection with the subject you are working from.  I want you to enjoy the materials you are using and be experimental. I will encourage you to be brave and hope for you to gain a fresh approach to painting.

    If you are a beginner, then this course will help you to get a feeling for the language of marks you can make with the materials.  You should begin to feel the fullness of the page without getting caught up in details and worring about the end result.  The most important thing is the process and making your own honest response to the landscape.

    And for experienced painters, I want you to go beyond what you know and your comfort zone.  This course will encourgaing you to engage all your senses and to create an emotional attachment with the landscape.
