Absolutely Karen – with this kind of composition which has a very dominant horizon those other shapes and directions are really crucial in creating more interest.
More thoughts – even in a horizontal lakescape the diagonal marks within the sky create a lot of movement `and the triangle shapes in the foreground of the bottom right sketch give more interest to the foreground.
