Felt inspired to put some early morning mist into the foreground of this view of Rigi mountain on Lake Lucerne. Not really sure if it has worked, so I may leave it for a week or two before tweaking the surface detail. I used a mixture of Hardings Warm White with their Flake white substitute . This seems to move about on the canvas during the long drying process to create the wonderful veil effect. I’m hoping just like mist hanging over the surface of the lake!

I’m appreciating your observations and comments , which are really valuable. I’ll remedy the redness in the left foreground. On reflection, I may substitute this with a touch of transparent iron oxide with its undertone of soft yellow. This has prompted an idea to paint a wisp of cloud (or two) at the top of the painting. I’m considering transparent red ochre – what do you think?

What an interesting painting Christopher, inspired by the Turner watercolour I assume? I love the delicate way the mountain is painted against the warm colours in the sky – it has a beautifully mysterious atmosphere. The white paint does give a sense of mist I think – the only thing which strikes me is that the red colours in the foreground take our attention away a bit from the mountain.
