I have been using oils for 6 or 7 years and have always mixed my own medium, as you do. I paint approx. 150 oils each year mostly en plein air, so don’t use much medium, but I use it mainly to soften paint which has become a little dry and hard. Here is an oil of life on board a tall ship, here I used sketches and some etchings as inspiration, and yes, it was made indoors. I have never used palette knives to paint with, only for mixing, so i will use this opportunity to learn how to paint with them, and see how they work. Thank you

Lovely mark-making in the sea and the sky Julian. I hope you find using a palette knife a helpful way to extend your range of marks – all these things are quite personal to each artist of course

What an interesting piece of work Julian . I think the mark making really brings the sea and sky to life! Thank you for sharing 🙂
