I’m sharing the work I did following the most recent lesson about transferring from the sketchbook to canvas. These are painted on paper rather than canvas, but I used the same methodology. It was a very interesting exercise, and I also used ultramarine which is a colour I wouldn’t normally include in my colour palette. Any comments gratefully received.

I often have a photograph in front of me when I’m painting so it felt quite strange to do it entirely from memory. Good fun. I think being a self-taught painter and coming at it from a painting as therapy angle, I don’t have too much trouble with using the intuitive side of the brain rather than the analytical, but it was certainly a great exercise. I need to listen to the lesson about right brain painting.

I think the colour combinations and mark-making are working very well Juli. Hope you found it useful to try ultramarine – of course you can use any blue you like, they will all have a different character and make different mixtures. How did you find the experience of getting into right-brain mode and not looking at your sketchbook?
