This is a Lime tree I spotted in a vineyard near Box Hill in Surrey. I love the sheer majesty of trees and forests and spend much of my time painting trees. This is a quick oil study size 12” x 10” showing the tree amongst the vines below. I contemplated adding a figure, for scale, but decided against it, thinking the shapes were interesting enough already. What do you think?

I completely agree with Mike about the figure. As it stands the beautiful lime tree is the focus of the painting- what a nicely observed range of greens, and the tones are working very well too

      Thank you Louise, very kind.

There are interesting shapes and textures here Julian, and a lovely array of greens. I wonder, do you mix the greens in advance or as you progress? Are they all mixed on the palette or do you also mix on the canvas? I’m enjoying the picture as it is and don’t think a figure is needed. It might detract rather than add to the scene.
