An almost rainy morning with bright clouds…a sparkly mist in the far distance obscuring the mountains. This is one that I actually like..the sky has lots of interest with colour & bolder marks & I like the balance of the blue & green & grey in the sky. The middle ground had pools of bright light beyond the growth (weeds) in kitchen garden which I’ve tried to capture. It doesn't have a clear focal point, but is that necessary/possible in all paintings? I think it has enough interest to hold the viewer.. As you can see I’m not very good at critiquing my work…one thing I have noticed with nearly all the paintings `I’ve done so far is that the skies have a strong diagonal element to them – from top right to bottom left ( right handed problem?)

Flummoxing is rather a good word to choose -I think that’s what I do with most foregrounds!
I also find foregrounds often flummoxing!
I love that. – thank you Rachel! My attempt at painting through the hedgerow!! I love skies & usually forget about the foreground…I’ll figure out what to do with them soon
I really like this painting! If I were to offer any critique, I would only say that the very foreground part feels a little bit like a wall? I say that with total trepidation, and please do not hesitate to ignore me.
There’s a lovely feeling of soft light in this one Karen. Very nice control of tones too. Paintings don’t necessarily need to have a strong focal point I don’t think – there’s a lot of interesting mark-making here and the dark area at lower left provides quite a satisfying contrast with the other tones. There can often be a strong diagonal direction with intuitive brushwork – in this case though it’s balanced by the horizontal elements in the sky and the horizon
