Early mornings are the only time to be able to get out & sketch, it’s a very stinky 38 degrees this afternoon, 44 degrees promised for next week.. Anyway, another rapid one in gouache without the added assistance of small boy! Trying to capture the coolness of the morning and the busy clouds & sunflower field all before the heat grows. It’s on OK sketch but I think there’s a something not quite there…maybe it’s the lemony yellow of the skyline that’s the problem

Really like the composition & the large areas of colour in the sky. I think you’re right about the lemon yellow, it has the feeling that you weren’t quite sure what to do there. Apart from that there’s a good feeling of space, I like the differentiation between the foreground sunflowers and the cool green middle distance. It’s helpful to have a paler and cooler colour there to give the idea of distance – if the tone isn’t too different from the sky it works well without needing to ‘blend’ or smooth the paint.
