I used earth palette adding alarazin crimson as I needed vibrant pinks and lilacs. My inspiration was my garden but it ended up more meadow than garden. I finished this painting in two sessions as I wanted to go back to painting alla prima rather than many layers

← This is a large (for me) oil painting I started on a two day course with Louise. I decided to paint a scene from memory, using only a smaller, more careful, studio painting made while in the New Forest, a year ago, and some rapid sketches. I like it, and enjoyed creating it, but I don’t know if it’s good or not? I love trees and forests, and paint them often, so am trying to be more intuitive than I used to be as a plein air artist, standing in front of the subject. What do you folks think? I want the truth – even if it hurts – do you see weaknesses, in colour choices, warm and cool, tonal differences, paint application.? It is 3ft x 2ft in size. Thank you As promised, here are some preliminary sketches made in the New Forest last year. They were all made outdoors in the forest, often quite quickly. Then I returned to the studio in the afternoons and worked up some small oil sketches. I think this collage gives a flavour of my activity. Thank you for your feedback. →

This painting gives a lovely feeling of being in the garden in the sunshine Elizabeth- it works very nicely and the colours and tones are well-judged. The different shades of green are dominant but you’ve integrated the pinks and lilacs very successfully.
