As promised, here are some preliminary sketches made in the New Forest last year. They were all made outdoors in the forest, often quite quickly. Then I returned to the studio in the afternoons and worked up some small oil sketches.
I think this collage gives a flavour of my activity.

Thank you Louise for your advice. I have never liked using charcoal or pastels, what I call ‘messy media’ but I realise it is helpfull when trying to work intuitively.
These are great Julian, thanks for sharing them. It’s always good to have loads of sketches & drawings in different media, & the whole time you’re doing them you’re absorbing all the different aspects of the place. I particularly like the energy in the charcoal drawings
