Painted many years ago on small wood panel 12x 8″. I am trying to replicate it but on a much larger canvas and using a palette knife. Sadly my attempts have lost the freshness of the original. I am inclined to look at it for a good while and then have a go at reproducing it without looking at the original again. I have also forgotten where in Venice I made this oil sketch. Perhaps sommeone migh trecognise the place.

Yes it was painted “plein air” What I will probably do is look at it hard for a good while and them just go at my canvas and use my memory of it to guide me.

I think that’s a very common experience Ian, it’s very hard to regain the freshness when you’re essentially copying your source. Was the original painted plein air? What a nice challenge to find out where in Venice the view is!
