You know how I love trees especially in woodlands and forests. I created this in watercolour first, then added indian and acrylic inks with hand cut bamboo dip pens in an abstract manner. This was imagined and memorised from the many hours spent in woodlands last summer, sketching and painting. I am slowly trying to change my methods of working from plein air start to finish oil paintings, to sketching out doors, and finishing from memory back in the studio.

Very nice Julian – there’s a good rhythm to the repeated verticals of the tree trunks. All kinds of working have their merits – when I work in the studio I like to be in right-brain mode so I’m painting very quickly. I love woods and trees too but I have to say I sometimes find it hard to work from memory without thinking’trees’ if you know what I mean!
