Also off the back of the Turner lesson (October 2023), I did this charcoal transcription of Colin McCahon's 'A Southern Landscape, 1950'. McCahon is my favourite artist, and painted very stylised and increasingly simplified/abstracted landscapes. (He was also known for using words in his paintings, particularly in his later work which consisted almost entirely of white words on a black background. I love pretty much all of it). In particular, with this painting, I love the moonlight on the water contrasted with the shadow of the hills. I didn't get round to doing a painted transcription. (See my message in the chat.) Yes, McCahon is what we call “world famous in New Zealand”. He should be better known elsewhere, but for various reasons he’s not.
Good points about his restricted palette and tonal patterns. Those are also reasons why I love his work.
What an interesting painter Chris, I hadn’t come across his work before. He’s often using a restricted palette and the tonal pattern is very important to his work, so it really makes sense to do a b&w transcription
