Moving on to a finished painting: second pass. Briefly, the green areas in the sky were de-emphasised but retained; the vertical brush marks on the left were removed and the sky was given more tonal range. I attempted to use a right brain approach when making the changes although I probably lapsed back into my usual thinking mode now and again. The marks in the sky tend to be in one direction and I’m still deciding how to add variety to that. Many thanks Louise and others for very useful feedback.

I agree this second version is definitely working better Mike, – glad all the feedback was helpful. I particularly like the darker area on the horizon which makes the tonal range more dramatic, and really liking the way the foreground is painted. As you say it’s always a challenge to stay in right-brain mode while making changes. I think you’re right about the direction of brushstrokes- I had the same issue in some of my earlier work so I can relate!
