Early mornings are the only time to be able to get out & sketch, it’s a very stinky 38 degrees this afternoon, 44 degrees promised for next week.. Anyway, another rapid one in gouache without the added assistance of small boy! Trying to capture the coolness of the morning and the busy clouds & sunflower field all before the heat grows. It’s on OK sketch but I think there’s a something not quite there…maybe it’s the lemony yellow of the skyline that’s the problem

A fun half an hour with 5 yr old grandson helping me sketch the morning light over the fields. We’ve both decided that we like gouache paint even though it dries in a heartbeat on the end of palette knife – dipping the knife in the river water helped apparently ( we got very wet & splattered with morning sparkle). I think I might do a lot more one-eyed collaborating with him over the holidays

A painting I’ve had sitting about for a while now – 80x60cm oil canvas board . I tried using much thinner oil paint and paint in layers (eurgh, waiting for layers to dry but not really sure if I need to wait for them to dry). I think I like the colour tones of the stormy sky and the concentration of glowing light in the centre – but you can probably see that I really didn’t know what to do with the foreground – at the time it was barely visible in teh lowering light. My instinct was to leave the foreground indistinct to draw the eye to the lowering sun, light flooding the field & the drama of those clouds. But…

Couldn’t be bothered to wait for the rain, thunder, hail to stop so braved the fields taking gouache paints with me to play with, oh and wellie boots & waterproofs. I haven’t tried gouache paint outside before, hmmm, they dried rather rapidly despite the dampness of the day…but anyway here’s the resultant sketch of the every-weather-possible day

I’ll get around to summer sketching once the rain stops – so much for SW France blue skies – near permanent rain!! So…here’s a small painting in oil on sealed & primed MDF – 20x20cm. Trying to be bold with brush & use a lot of paint – I have chased the oil paint around on this surface for what feels like forever, it’s stopped raining so I’m off outside & will give up painting (permanently…..well maybe until tomorrow)
