Diptych- (2) 6″x6″ oil | wood panels- I composed this image using still footage ( “Beaches” movie) of Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey, dropping them into the Crystal Cove background of the scene’s location. Essentially the color is somewhat made up. Wish to get feedback on the color. I prefer the muted whites on Barbara Hershey’s (left) hat/blanket suggesting more of an overcast day- On the other hand, when I stepped back, the whites of Bette Midler’s turban and robe are too bright, as well as the sand (mid ground) and reds in the foreground seem too saturated. Appreciate thoughts. thx.

This is a drawing I was working on as this course began. From which I have done a series of studies and sketches with the aim of producing a final piece. I will post the various drawings – I seem to have to post these individually ?

This was a helpful task. I made a study limited to three values. It took a lot of concentration seeing and judging values constantly. I am not used to doing that. I used a gray scale/value finder and a red filter to look through to judge. I see how doing more exercises like this can help my painting in the long run. With more practice I will hopefully I get better at judging without using tools .

Learning from Turner

I really enjoyed the back catalogue session on learning from Turner. I’m sharing a watercolour he made in 1805 which I used as a reference to try and learn from his brushstrokes and mark making. Version 1 is when I was looking at the reference. Version 2, was when I worked on the painting further, just going in the right brain.

I went through my sketchbooks and made this oil sketch from the memory of a day last March. I also tried to keep some of those compositional elements Louise discussed in the last video in the back of my mind as I was working. I enjoyed the square format-8” x8”.

I am working on a value study for the painting of the breakfast scene. Instead of continuing to work on the large painting, I want to start a smaller study/copy and test out changes. I want to focus on compressing the value scale and limit the color palette. I hope this can help harmonize the design. I have compressed the image into only three values and I want to try to not go to dark in the darkest darks and rather try to make the shadows interesting in a way. In other words…. I have a lot of work to do :)

Also off the back of the Turner lesson (October 2023), I did this charcoal transcription of Colin McCahon’s ‘A Southern Landscape, 1950’. McCahon is my favourite artist, and painted very stylised and increasingly simplified/abstracted landscapes. (He was also known for using words in his paintings, particularly in his later work which consisted almost entirely of white words on a black background. I love pretty much all of it). In particular, with this painting, I love the moonlight on the water contrasted with the shadow of the hills. I didn’t get round to doing a painted transcription. (See my message in the chat.) The original painting: https://www.mccahon.co.nz/cm000284
